College Football Predictions: 2010 Boston College Eagles. - Sports - Football

The Boston College Eagles went 9-5 on College Football Picks in 2009, finishing second in the Atlantic division of the conference behind Clemson. The Eagles went were 6-6 against the spread, going over the betting odds total 5 times and under 7 times. Boston college usually gets overshadowed by the sexier schools in the ACC such as Miami, Virginia Tech, Florida State an Georgia Tech but that won't be the case this college football picks season. The return of linebacker Mark Herzlich the 2008 ACC defensive player of the year assures that, Herzlich missed the entire 2009 season with a form of bone cancer. Herzlich participated in spring drills and will be the biggest reason for optimism in Chestnut Hill but certainly not the only reason. The Boston College offense was sluggish in 2009, they ranked in the lower half of college football in almost every category, 98th in total offense, averaging 323.9 yards per game, 93rd in passing yards averaging 187 yards per contest through the air, the running game was just as bad, the team ranked 71st nationally with 136.9 yards per game and the team only scored 24.8 points per game, 79th in college football. The Defense was tough up front in 2009, giving up only 103 yards on the ground per game allowing only 19 points per contest but the pass defense struggled giving up a little over 224 yards per game in the air, that ranked 71 in the nation.

The Boston College Eagle will be able to run on just about any team in the country but the question in 2010 is will teams stack the box and force BC to throw the football. Junior Montel Harris to rushed for 1,457 last season and he is back with 4 of his blockers also retuning including first team all conference performer, tackle Anthony Castonzo who is a 4 year starter and potential 1st round draft pick. Quarterback Dave Shinskie threw for 15 touchdowns last season but he also threw 14 interceptions, Shinske is a 26 year old sophomore and will be without wide receiver Rich Gunnell. If Shinskie struggles the Eagles won't hesitate to go with Mike Marscovetra, freshman Chase Rettig or Josh Bordner.

If Herzlich returns to his 2008 form then the Boston college defense will be outstanding. Linebacker Luke Kuechly had a breakthrough freshman campaign in 2009 ranking 2nd overall in the nation in solo tackles with 87, linebacker Mike Morrissey also returns to the starting lineup. The defensive line returns end Alex Albright and tackle Damik Scafe, the defensive backfield returns ball hawking safety Wes Davis and cornerback DeLeon Gause, these guys must provide leadership to a unit that wasn't that great to begin with and 2 new inexperienced starter could mean trouble. Overall this sports handicapper believes Boston College will have an OK season but in the ACC Atlantic division things are wide open.
