2010 Football Predictions: Fresno State Bulldogs. - Sports - Football

The Fresno State Bulldogs have always played on the moot, that we will play anybody, anywhere. Fresno State was once one of the most feared mid-major team in college football, but their WAC conference rival, Boise State has taken over that supremacy. The Bulldogs finished 8-5 on College Football Picks in 2009, but lost to Wyoming 35-28 in the New Mexico Bowl. The bulldogs went 7-5 against the spread, going over the betting odds total 6 times and under 6 times. Fresno State will play 7 homes games for the first time since 1994, usually the Bulldogs are creating opportunities in statement games against high profile programs. In 2010 the Bulldogs will travel to Ole Miss and host Cincinnati and Illinois. Fresno State will have to replace Ryan Mathews, who was a 1st round draft pick, but they return seven starters on offense and eight on defense.

The Fresno State offense ranked 17th overall in the FBS, averaging 430.5 yards per game, the running game was nearly awesome, with 228.9 per contest, that was 8th nationally, the passing game struggled, averaging a little over 201 yards per game and that was 79th in the nation, the Bulldogs offense averaged 33.8 points per contest and that was good for 14th in the country. As good as the offense was, the defense was equally as bad, giving up 413.7 yards per game, 214 of those came on the ground, as opponents ran the ball down the Bulldogs throat, Fresno State also gave up 28.4 points per contest and that was 84th in the nation.

Robbie Rouse returns at running back this season, he gained 479 yards in 2009, scored four touchdowns, while averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Michael Harris and A.J. Ellis round out the running back trio. The key to the offense will be quarterback Ryan Colburn, he threw 7 interceptions in his first 4 games but cut down on the turnovers as the season progressed. Jamel Hamler emerged over the second half of the season and should be the go to guy in 2010. Devon Wylie and A.J. Johnson should also contribute. The offensive line will be led by guard Andrew Jackson, one of the top lineman in the Western Athletic Conference. He leads a group that return all five starters form last season, Fresno State will not miss a beat running the football.

Fresno State hopes last season's experience pays off. The defense could not stop the run, especially late in the season. Three lineman return from that unit, Chris Carter accounted for 5 of the 11 sacks last season. Linebacker Ben Jacobs led the team in tackles, and is the defense's top playmaker, forcing three fumbles in a game against Louisiana Tech last season. The Bulldogs will also have to find replacements for strong safety Moses Harris and cornerback A.J. Jefferson. The Bulldogs could make it interesting in the WAC this season.
